Sneaky Preview of Album Design

I just finished the album design for the band The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra, and I heard back yesterday that they are all delighted with the look of it. It will be going to print very soon, and will be on sale nationwide, including all regular outlets like HMV, which is very exciting to hear. Their website is under going a bit of a redesign at the moment but you can check out their work on myspace here.
This is a little sneaky peek at one of the sketches I did for the booklet, I can't release the design yet as it's all very top secret at the moment!!

Reference Books

As I mentioned it was myself and Johns 3 year anniversary last week, and this is what he got me for my present. These two great books:

Recharge your Design Batteries published by Rotovision
It's got lots of ideas and mini projects. It's the kind of handy resource book to have when you hit a wall and all ideas have dried up, it would get the motor running again. I haven't had time yet to really go through it properly bt it looks promising so far.

200 Ideas to get you into Fashion Design by Adrian Grandon

In some ways might this book might sound likes it's a little redundant for me but there are lots of handy little tips in it. Since I was never formally trained in fashion there are lots of things that I missed out on learning, and I've picked a few things up from this book already. And it's also very pretty which immediately makes me like a book. So it's now living beside my computer with all my reference books. Looking at them makes me want to buy more.

Graphic Design for Brad Pitt..

Today I was doing sketches for the new Brad Pitt Light Orchestra (BPLO) album. I've done work for them before, some posters and single covers, and we have a good working relationship. They want to stay with their black white and red colour scheme as it suits the dramatic caberet feel to this seven piece band. I'm working on a series of drawing of the band members, in pen, which I will be later scanning in to play with composition. It's been hard work but I feel it coming together and I'm quite excited about what I'm gonna do with it.
There album will be released in the next few months ,and I will be doing their t-shirt designs too, which should be lots of fun.
The above is a poster I did for them a while ago.

Twitchy Fingers Syndrome

I was showing someone my website last night in work, and I realised with all the market and clothes stuff that I'm doing lots of people don't know that my background is actually in visual art. I studied fine art printmaking in Limerick School of Art and Design. I really loved it it there,it was like a warm safe bubble where all I had to do was think about myself and what I wanted to make:an artists dream. Even though I worked really hard I still look back now and think I didn't take full advantage of the resources; the library, the print studio, the endless tech skill of the tutors. But these insights come with a few years of experience out in the real world and I suppose I was very young at the time. I still don't think I would choose fashion as my discipline if I had the choice now, I'm glad that I happily landed in this, rather that fretting over technical issues. I think I'm freed somewhat by my ignorance, I just look at the clothes and fumble through until I get where I want-it makes for some experimental and interesting results.I'll definitely go back to doing fine art and graphic design, diffent projects always seem to pop up randomly. My boyfriend accuses me of being too scatty and that I should focus on one dicipline, but I think all the diffent creative threads feed each other. My graphics is not slick and cold like others because of my art background, and sometimes my clothes feel like drawings.I would be afraid to stick with one thing for a few years for fear it would get stale. On top of the fact that I don't think I could stop myself endlessly tinkering with different things. If I have a few projects on the go at all times it keeps my twitching fingers happy.

So here are a smattering of pictures I've created in various media over the past few years.
