What I'm Wearing: A Head Scarf

I saw this Pin last week on Pinterest of a girl wearing a 1950's style head scarf and decided I wanted to take the leap and try it. I've always thought they were adorable but wasn't sure if I could pull it off.  I think I managed it pretty well, I wore it with casual clothes sans make-up on my way down town to meet a friend for coffee. But I think it would also look great with a little make-up and some red lippy and eyeliner.

Ages ago I watched this fantastic hair tutorial on Youtube(which I quite obviously didn't do) but part of it was advice on how to tie a head scarf. She recommended that you use two clips at the side to hold it in place. I used matching red button hair clips, how predictable am I? As my hair is quite fine I used a couple of slide to boost the front of my hair just a little bit so it didn't look too flat. I also pulled out a few scraggly bits at the ears to messy it up a bit. The scarf itself was just a bit of scrap fabric I had lying about the place.

By the way the glasses are from Pennies, what a find! They were only a few quid, and they are the cutest shade of duck egg blue.

What I'm Wearing; Polka Dot Pencil Skirt

I've been looking for a pencil skirt for ages, and also a polka dot skirt, and then magically I found two in one! I like clashing patterns, especially spots with stripes, it as a little to too chilly to wear this sloppy backless top without something underneath; the stripes seemed like an obvious choice.

If you are wondering what on earth I'm standing beside, it's a 10 foot light box made by my incredibly talented friend Norma Lowney. It's a wall paper pattern silk screened onto tracing paper, and mounted in a large box, I use it as a large lamp in the evening.

Boots: €10 ,charity shop
Skirt: €11 Pennies
Top: striped top years ago in Dunnes €6
Top: Black loose backless t-shirt Pennies €8
Button Bracelet: Magpie and Button €20
Button Necklace: €1 at a flea market
Hat: €2 in Claire's Accessories
Belt: €3 Pennies

How Strawberries Taught me Two Lessons

During the week I decided to made lots of the strawberry keyrings that I blogged about last week. I couldn't help myself after getting that beautiful fabric in Vibes and Scribes in Cork, strawberries and polka dots are meant to be bossom buddies!
Firstly I broke the number one rule of 'measure twice cut once'. Instead I barely measured and cut out 20 circles, all way too small. I then proceeded to waste 3 hours sewing while never really noticing the tiny size. I blame complete exhaustion for my total lack of wits that day. Eventually I noticed I was making lots of miniscule strawberries, but I'm way too stubborn to give up so I went back to the drawing board, remeasured and started again. In the end after much post watershed language I got this bunch of key rings finished.
Another lesson I learned on this project was to shop around. I needed to buy the rings to go on the keyrings, I priced some at my local shoe repair shop, I was quoted 50 cent each, or wholesale 30 euro for 100. I thought this was a bit prohibitively expensive so I tried somewhere else instead, where I got a whopping 100 rings for only 4 euro. So don't be afraid to say no, always ask for wholesale price when you are buying in bulk, and it never hurts to flirt a bit too!!

Note: After timing myself making them I decided to charge 4 euro each for them. They take longer to made then I had originally estimated, and these are larger than the first prototypes. I still think it's a fair price and it's a handy small handmade gift that won't break the bank.

Delicious New Fabrics

In a follow up to yesterdays gushing about the supplies I got when I was down in Cork, I also found a fantastic material shop too. Apparently Vibes and Scribes was a book shop before and they've just added a sewing section in the past few months. Weirdly it makes perfect sense, you can but fantastic sewing goodies and the browse through beautiful art and craft books. This was the shop I really had to rein in my urge to splurge lots of money. I did allow myself to buy this stack of green fat quarters, and this great selection of half meter pieces. Nearly every fabric that I saw I wanted to buy, so you can imagine it was really difficult to just buy these ones. I'll be using them to make my knitting needle cases and my strawberry key-rings. At the moment I want to invent an 8th and 9th day of the week so I can get lots of things made.

I like to Polka

How cute are these notebooks? I was in Tesco yesterday and I just had to buy them, and they were cheap as chips at only about a fiver for the two of them. The little pink polka dot one is to use at the new market, and it comes with a handy pen. And well the other one was just too adorable to leave in the shop, I knew it needed to join my ever growing collection of notebooks....but as all stationary addicts know you can never have too many notebooks!

Window Shopping Love

Ok I need to start closing my eyes when I'm leaving work. As you have read before I couldn't resist the cupcake sugar bowl when I was walking past Carrig Donn, which is next door to where I work. But now they have put a giant tea cup and saucer bowl in the window, and it's polka dot!! How can I possibly resist?? It's so cute, and I swear it calls out my name when I walk past it. It's only 30 euro, which is a great price for how fantastic it looks, but should I really spend 30 quid on a bowl I don't need? Probably not, but I don't think I can ignore it's call much longer.

I got this picture from their website, it's of the normal sized cup, but the bowl is far cuter, and way more Alice in Wonderland shaped.

Dot likes to Polka-New Work

I've been a busy lady today with all the new material I got yesterday. I used some old jeans, and corduroy trousers for the basis of these skirts. The bottom colour of polka dot continues onto the inside in a lovely puffball shape. These are so fun if I must say so myself!
